Halloween & the E.R.

>> Wednesday, October 31, 2018

So our Halloween started out with a bit of a 'scare'....literally!!!

Eli's been running high fevers since yesterday. This morning he passed out and lost consciousness for a little bit and was shaking like it might have been a seizure. I did the best I could to catch him so he didn't hit his head. He's not a little boy anymore, and it certainly wasn't graceful, but I was able to help him to the ground. Lol!

I got him a pillow to put under his head once he came to and could respond. I've never seen anyone pass out like that before. It was really scary!

I called his doctor and explained what happened and she felt it was necessary for us to go to the E.R. for some tests.

I was teasing him saying he decided to dress up as an E.R. patient for Halloween. LOL! It didn't get any laughs. :P

He was NOT happy about this! He hates needles and they of course always draw blood. He was whiter than white when they came to draw it. He has beautiful veins and he said the pain isn't even the worst part, it's the thought of the needle being inside of his body. :/

He was a trooper though and he survived! :) We did however deny the IV. He probably could have used it but he wasn't about that life! LOL!

He got some x-rays too. This mobile machine was pretty slick!

We were there for several hours. Halloween is a busy day I guess. They discharged him and didn't really give us any diagnosis. His labs were good and his x-ray was clear. So we left the hospital without a diagnosis.

Thankfully, earlier in the day Brynne offered to come over to take Alayna Trick-or-Treating. It worked out so perfectly!

She saved the night for her while we were at the ER with Eli. She is such a an amazing young woman! So grateful for her! ❤️❤️❤️

Spirit Week

>> Tuesday, October 30, 2018

This week has been Spirit Week at Alayna's school. They were supposed to dress up as a Disney character. She had no idea what she could throw together but at the last minute she found an idea and it worked out so well!!!

Can you tell who she's Disney Bounding as???

If you guessed Bert from Mary Poppins you are correct!

I thought she was very clever! :)

Trunk-or-Treat and Boog's 40th Surprise Party!

>> Sunday, October 28, 2018

Halloween is quickly approaching and our Ward had our annual Trunk-or-Treat on Saturday night! :)

Our kids are growing up but Alayna and Eli still dressed up this year.

Alayna was Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games. We practiced that fancy braid all week!! LOL!

A couple of her friends...cute girls.

Eli and the young men and young women in the ward ran all the games and booths for the younger kids to play. His was the Donut Pinata.

They tied a string to whichever donut the kid's picked then they had to try to bite it off the string while they bobbed it up and down making it hilarious and difficult for the kids.

By the way, Eli went as a "Bread Winner". He wore a gold medal and carried around a (squishy foam) loaf of bread. We were REALLY surprised at how many people have never heard of that term!! Do they live in a cave???? LOL!

Jared photo-bombed our pic. :P

Jared and I had to leave about an hour into the party to run over to Boog's surprise 40th bday party. His birthday is actually on Halloween. I've always thought that was kinda fun!

Our family doesn't take pics together very often so I wanted to be sure to get a couple. Unfortunately, my sister wasn't able to make it.

It was a nice small gathering of friends and family. My "little" brother has joined the 40 Club. LOL! Happy birthday Noonie! :P

The Melchizedek Priesthood

>> Sunday, October 21, 2018

Today was a blessed day! πŸ™

Walker received the Melchizedek Priesthood. My heart is full! ❤️❤️

Jared conferred the Melchizedek Priesthood upon Walker today with the help of Bishop Schnepf, Bro. Williams, Bro. Durfee and Bro. Hatch from the Stake High Council.

The Spirit was so sweet and beautiful as Jared performed this sacred ordinance. He spoke about so many important things to help Walker as he prepares for his future. It was so moving and powerful. <3

Bishop Schnepf and Bro. Hatch bore tender testimonies about the power of the Lord's Priesthood. They spoke about always being worthy to call upon the powers of heaven. That through the Priesthood he can use it to not only bless others through healing and comfort blessings, but in his everyday life. They spoke about him preparing to go to the Temple and taking out his Endowments and preparing to serve a mission.

They counselled  him to give his mom his first blessing. <3 I have no objections to that! :) Number one,  so he'll always remember who he gave his first blessing to. And number two, it will be in the comfort and safety of his home surrounded by people who love him and in his own language. On a mission it can get a little more complicated if you have to learn another language and when you don't know the people that well yet.

Tears were shed and hearts were overflowing with gratitude. He's making good choices in his life that will take him where the Lord will have him go.

I love this young man with all my heart!!! I'm so grateful to be his mom and have a front row seat in all he does...even if I get teased by him for being too mushy. :P

New Season, New Team

>> Saturday, October 20, 2018

Alayna loves volleyball! Have I mentioned that before? LOL!

We signed her up for another league in the off season. We've never played volleyball with them before so it will be interesting to see how it goes. So far, the team is young. Most of the girls haven't played before and they they are just young in age as well. Alayna is one of the oldest girls.

They have practice at a community park. The weather has been GORGEOUS and so have the views!!!

They are practicing on a sand court which has proven to be challenging. It's difficult to find an indoor space for free.

They had their first game today. It was a brutal defeat. Team Snot Rockets (gross I know..lol!) was a much older team with players that we're pretty sure play on Jr. High teams. We didn't have a chance.

Alayna is #9. Team Mission Unstoppable!

However, it provided a good opportunity for us to talk to Alayna about never quitting even when you're behind. To always give it your BEST! No. Matter. What!!

Yes it's more fun to win. But that doesn't mean there aren't valuable lessons to still be learned. Typically, it's in our trials and defeats in life we learn the MOST!

We also talked about the practice she puts in every week will pay off. She will continue to get better and she can help her team to get better. She's one of the more experienced players and she has a lot to offer the other girls. :)

Another Driver

>> Monday, October 15, 2018

Eli took his diver's permit test online last night. Yep! That's a thing now! Technology...

We went down to the DMV to finish the process. Which we hoped would be much faster...but it wasn't. Especially since we had to go back home after already waiting in line because I grabbed a copy of his birth certificate and not the original. Sigh...

But...we survived and he is legal and legit! He's super excited to get out on the open road. Mom and Dad are still wrapping their heads around the fact he's old enough to start driving!

Ariana Grande

>> Sunday, October 14, 2018

Alayna is trying to hone in her skills on "real people". I think she's off to a great start!

BIG Changes!

>> Saturday, October 13, 2018

Drum roll please! πŸ₯

Eli got a haircut!

The photo really doesn't do it justice. It looks so good! 😍 It is a big change. We're still getting used to it. Lol!

I like his hair long too. He can pull it off. His "before" was a little dramatic cuz they brushed it out. Everyone knows you can't do that to curly hair. It grows! Lol! πŸ˜‚πŸ€£ He was ready for a change. πŸ˜‰He looks so grown up!

Alayna Took a Turn for the Worse

>> Thursday, October 11, 2018

Sunday was General Conference. That was a blessing. Our family was able to stay home and be spiritually fed. Alayna had the chance to rest and be pampered all day. That evening Jared and I went to our Financial Self-Reliance class and by the time we got home around 8:30pm Alayna had taken a turn for the worse.

She had been running a high fever of 102.7 and her cough was non-stop. All the Urgent Care facilities were closed. We weren't quite sure if we could give her ibuprofen and it would help her or if we should just take her to the ER?

I have a hard time making that call because of my PTSD. I can't be unbiased in my thoughts so we just asked her how she felt and she made not two bones about it and said she needed to go. I'm SO glad we listened to her!!!

There were so many tender mercies along the way. The first being that we walked into the ER and we were the only ones there! They took Alayna back immediately and she got a bed.

The doctor came in and assessed her, gave her Tylenol on top of the Ibuprofen I'd already given her at home to help the fever to come down. They got her into x-ray and the doctor said the image showed a "significant pneumonia". Oh...my poor sweet girl..... :(

They said they wanted her to stay over night to keep an eye on her. Mercy Gilbert Hospital has a Phoenix Children's Hospital Wing and they take non-critical patients. We were grateful we didn't have to transfer hospitals.

After a couple of hours the fever responded to the medicine. They got a bag of IV fluids in her and she was starting to perk up. Enough that she was finally hungry!

She's never had an IV before and the nurse asked her which arm she wanted it in. She was a trooper and handled the IV placement like a champ! However, she said to put it in her right arm....she's right handed....that made everything more difficult because you can't really bend the arm. So Dad came to the rescue and went to the cafeteria and got her a chicken sandwich and then helped her eat it! LOL!

When we got to her room her nurse on night shift was asking who our pediatrician was. We told her and she said, that's who she takes her kids too. Jared asked where she lived and she told us. We looked at each other and said, that's where we live! We are neighbors!!!

It's really interesting because our pediatrician isn't very close. She's in Tempe. So for us both to have the same doctor and live in the same neighborhood is pretty wild! LOL!

I'm going to post what I put up on FaceBook.

Update Monday: Alayna was admitted last night. She's still having difficulty breathing and coughing a lot. πŸ˜” IV antibiotics are being administered. Fever needs to come down and stay down. She'll most likely be staying another night. Thank you for everyone's prayers. Please keep them coming. Our family is feeling them! Thank you! ❤️❤️πŸ™πŸ™

Another "coincidence" is that Alayna just started playing for a new volleyball league. Her new volleyball coach is the Administrator at Mercy for Phoenix Children's Hospital. She saw Alayna's name on the list and she came right in and checked on us personally throughout her stay. She made sure she was very well taken care of and that she had all the Popsicles and snacks she wanted. :)  It was such a blessing!

Her nurses were great! They took such good care of her. This picture breaks my heart. Just look at her red little face. The fevers were really high and took a long time to bring them down. The antibiotics just weren't doing their job well enough.

Update Tuesday: She had a really rough night. Fever spiked again and coughing fits were non-stop. Sleep is so needed for healing but is almost impossible. Any small nap she can get feels like a miracle! The doctor has doubled up her antibiotics hoping it will kick this terrible infection. It's been a long week and a half. πŸ˜” Please continue to pray for her. Thank you all for your love and support. We've been reading her all of your comments and messages. It definitely lifts her spirits. ❤️

On a side note: Isn't that blanket and lamb so cute???? The blanket was handmade (and looks like candy corn...fitting for October! :) )  and donated to the hospital. Both were hers to keep! So neat! <3

Clever way to drink your water! LOL!

Update Tuesday Afternoon: THANK YOU for everyone's prayers! Alayna is home!!!! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ She's still recovering but is doing much better this afternoon. The doctor was satisfied with her oxygen levels and her fevers have stayed down for several hours. She is SO happy to be back home and to be done with that uncomfortable IV. πŸ’‰We are so grateful for your outpouring of love, prayers, texts and well wishes. They were/are just as much apart of her treatment/recovery as what she received from the hospital. ❤️❤️ Please continue to pray for a full recovery. We are blessed by your lives!

Leaving the hospital. I think the adrenaline from being able to finally go home kicked in. We hadn't seen a smile like that in over a week and a half!

Update Wednesday: Yesterday's adrenaline wore off. She's been exhausted all day. She woke up at 5am with coughing fits and couldn't sleep. Thankfully she was able to get a nap later in the day.

So many people have been calling, texting, sending gifts, food, treats and well wishes. It's been overwhelming and humbling! We are so grateful for all of the prayers, faith, and love being sent our way for our little girl.

Update Thursday: Alayna is doing better. Her fevers have stopped but she's still having difficulty with the horrible cough. It prevents her from getting much sleep. But with pneumonia the cough can last for weeks they said. She wants to get up and play but at the same time she gets worn out really quickly and too much exertion brings on coughing fits. We are grateful she's home though and getting a little better each day. ❤️

As I write this it's now 1:19pm. She is still asleep! I'm not sure if she got up at all last night. She didn't come in and wake me up for anything. I'm hoping she's getting the rest her little body needs and will feel much better when she wakes up!

Update: It's 1:35pm. She finally woke up and she's feeling SO MUCH BETTER! She said she only woke up once last night but was able to go back to sleep pretty quickly! She's has big smiles and her color looks much improved. I think she's finally turned the corner and will be back to he old self soon! Hallelujah!!!
