Flashback- 8 Years Ago -2009

>> Friday, March 31, 2017

Facebook has a neat little app that shows you past memories of posts you've made. Today a little "gem" popped up!

I just found Alayna (2 yrs. old) in her room. She had climbed onto her changing table, ripped off her pants and diaper, laying on her back trying to wipe her rear with wipes!!!
I guess I might need to start potty training already. :(

Haha! I had forgotten all about this little memory! :P I can tell you right now  I was less than thrilled about this site on that day....

But now 8 years later, it sounds really funny and expresses her personality so well!

Happy Birthday In Heaven!

>> Saturday, March 25, 2017

Today would have been my Grandma Donher's 87th birthday! She has been on my mind a lot lately. I've felt her very close. I had a very tender experience at the Temple last week that I will never forget! <3

She passed away at the age 57 from brain cancer. Too young!

Grandpa William McClendon (her 1st husband) & Grandma Donher (Smith, McClendon) Bernal

She was beautiful!!!

This picture was taken on my 1st bday. She passed away 10 years after this photo was taken. I was 11 years old.

Happy birthday in heaven Grandma! Love you and miss you!!!

Rogers Canyon

Eli and his Scout Troop had a campout last night and then hiked Rogers Canyon today.

Setting up camp!

Brian, Dallin, Bro. Frank, Derek, Devon, Eli & Tanner

Heading out early for their 8 mile hike. :)
All the same boys but with their other Scout leader Bro. Woolf

Some info from the web: The Roger's Canyon cliff dwelling is located halfway between Phoenix and Globe, in the middle of the Superstition Wilderness. It was built by the Salado—a culture related to the Hohokam—who inhabited the Tonto Basin from about 1150 to 1450 AD. This particular site once contained about 65 rooms and storage areas, and probably housed as many as 100 people. Most of the site has been destroyed by a series of historical inhabitants, pot-hunters, archaeological research projects, and hikers. Nevertheless, this is still one of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in the area. The ruins are built into a series of small caves that are formed in volcanic tuff, which is rough, crumbly and razor sharp. After six hundred years, the original wooden lintel still supports the wall over the doorway into the open courtyard.

It's pretty cool that they could explore the ruins.

Of course Eli was the only one crazy enough to get into the water. It was freezing!!! It's all snow melt. :P

They had a blast! Eli came home exhausted, dirty, and sunburned. He didn't bring sunblock...but apparently none of the boys did. However, Eli has pretty fair skin and the sun is brutal to the kid. :)

Grateful for great leaders who give of their free time to help these boys have awesome experiences! :)

Stranded!!!

>> Friday, March 24, 2017

Two days after his car battery died this happened last night!!!

He changed the tire and put the spare on and then as he was about a third of the way home this happened....

 the spare blew out!

Jared was stranded on the side of the road eastbound on the loop 202 and Priest off ramp.  He has a client he goes to after work. They are out in Peoria. He was a little closer to home than that but still in the middle of nowhere.  He was already tired and frustrated with the dead car battery this week and changing the 1st bad tire. Now he had no options but to call roadside assistance.

This is a panoramic pic he took. Sorta hard to see... no cars anywhere. :(

He called roadside assistance and they were sending a tow truck out. At that time the ETA was 1.5 hrs. Around 2.25 hrs later he called to see what the hold up was. His tow truck had been canceled!!! UGH! After an our of holding and bickering, they got him back in the queue. They said it would be another hour!

I think it ended up being over 4 hours sitting on the side of the road, alone, in the dark, in the middle of the desert. Poor guy! If it were to have been me...I would have been freaking out!

He got home at 11:50 pm. He was worn out, starving, thirsty, and done with the day!

I was glad he got home safe! It was a complete fiasco!

District Elementary Art Show

>> Wednesday, March 22, 2017

Alayna came running home from school and burst into the house saying, "I'm really sorry I couldn't wait!!!!"

I had no idea what she was talking about. Then she handed me an envelope that was already opened.

She said, "It said not to open it until I got home but I couldn't help myself. It said I earned an achievement and the suspense was killing me. My teacher and class told me to go ahead and open it because they were too excited too. So I did!!! I'm really sorry though! "

I told her it was fine and I wasn't upset. I started to read the letter and I couldn't believe what she earned! I was beaming for her!!!!!

She was selected from her school to go to the District Elementary Art Show!!! It's quite an honor!! Her art has been getting so good! She nurtures her talent and practices it all the time. It comes so naturally for her. I'm so happy that others are noticing as well!!!

Her school's night is Tuesday April 11th at Norwood Furniture in Gilbert! We will be there with bells on!!! So very proud of my girl!!!

Congratulations Alayna you deserve it!!! <3

Giving It The Boot!

>> Thursday, March 16, 2017

Today Alayna gave "the boot" the boot!!! Woohoo!!!

She's not having anymore pain in her heel and she's been cleared to go back to wearing tennis shoes with heel inserts.

She is so happy to finally get that thing off. It made recess, P.E., and volleyball a drag.

After her appointment we went shoe shopping to get her more supportive and better quality shoes to help ensure she won't have this problem repeat itself. It can come and go up until she stops growing. Somewhere around the age of 13. We hope it never comes back!

Yay for awesome bodies that heal and repair! :)

Family Temple Day!

>> Saturday, March 11, 2017

We did Family Temple Day a little differently this month. We usually go early in the morning but we had some conflicts so we decided to go at lunch time. It ended up being a perfect time to go!

The Temple was mostly full of people there for weddings. We saw so many brides. It was fun to look at all the different style of dresses. Alayna and I just ooo'd and ahhh'd. :P

The baptistery wasn't busy and the guys were in and out in under an hour.

Alayna and I learned how to find family name cards you've left at the temple for over a month. That was fun digging through all the boxes and credenzas. :P

I also planned a fun lesson for us to learn about why it's important to treat our bodies like temples and then we played a game of charades that was themed to the lesson. She said it was the most fun day yet!!! <3

It was a beautiful spring day and it felt wonderful to be at the Temple!

We decided to try out Which Wich for lunch. It's a sandwich place. It was ok. We all decided we wouldn't go back though. Too many other yummy places to try! :)

Final Volleyball Class!

>> Friday, March 10, 2017

Alayna has loved this volleyball skills class she's been taking through the Town of Gilbert. She has learned so much in such a short amount of time! Her skills have gotten markedly better! She's easily the top two in her class! So proud of her!

They were supposed to have the parents play against the kids but I guess legally it wasn't allowed so we just had to watch. Alayna was pretty bummed. So were we!!!

At the end of the class they were awarded ribbons.

I hope she will continue to take more classes like these to help her get better and better. Volleyball is so much fun!

I'm Shrinking....

>> Saturday, March 4, 2017

Eli has hit a major growth spurt. I'm pretty sure he's been taller than me for a while now but last night I was looking at him and I felt really short!!!

Jared took a quick pic to see how much taller he really is than me. I'm 5'6" by the way. I'm not "short"! LOL!!!

We didn't measure him, for whatever reason, but he's got to be about 5' 9" at least! He's only 13! This boy is going to be tall! :)

Boyce Thompson Arboretum

>> Friday, March 3, 2017

Jared went with Alayna on her class fieldtrip to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum!

They took a few selfies on the bus. :P

It was a perfect day to be out. The weather was beautiful!

From their website: "Boyce Thompson Arboretum is the largest and oldest botanical garden in the state of Arizona. It is one of the oldest botanical institutions west of the Mississippi. The Arboretum was founded in the 1920s by mining magnate Col. William Boyce Thompson. It encompasses 323 acres."

They got to do some hands on learning and workshops.

Gathering kids for a group photo is easier said than done. :P

They had a fun time and learned so much about our beautiful desert plants. I think having Dad come along was probably the biggest highlight of her day though! <3
